Being Effective in this New World

Bill Drayton and Valeria Budinich at the HBS blog wrote the following paragraph in a blog entry earlier this week-- it really resonates with me.

"To be effective in this new world, you will need to master the skills of empathy and teamwork, as well as leadership and driving change. You will need to know how to function in a world that is not a hierarchy but a kaleidoscopic global team of teams, with no boundaries between sectors and change that happens at an escalating pace."

I am so glad that empathy and teamwork are acknowledged as keys to success!

They are important characteristics that I see in many successful business leaders and are critical for strong business relationships.

  • Mimi,

Your post made me think of a conversation I just had with a CEO struggling with a board that doesn't really understand that the new game of business requires  these new leadership skills. The old model of a business as a well-oiled machine governed by hierarchial command and control has given way to a far more fluid organizational model that thrives on influence and committment. Thankfully, it's a whole new world where our ability to move beyond just the technical allows people to thrive.

  • Mimi: They're right - it's 2010, not 1960.  Hierarchies may be dinosaurs, on the brink of extiction.  Teams are everything, internally to be sure, but transcending the boundaries of single organizations.  And, empathy can't be faked, at least not for long.  The kaleidoscope image implies diversity, too, and that has become operational reality in global relationships.  Art
