Wal-Mart has been one of the most successful international businesses in the world. In the process of expanding to India, it is important for Wal-Mart to develop a good relationship with farmers, as farmers are a vital aspect to India’s food industry. Wal-Mart is trying to create a secure initial agricultural position that can be used for further improvement in India. In order to improve efficiency and increase the flow of goods, the company uses hyper efficient practices in their distribution model. For the past few years, Wal-Mart has been developing a close and trustworthy relationship with the farmers in India. In Haider Nagar, farmers prefer to do business with Wal-Mart because the farmers get paid well and on time. Wal-Mart distributes its products quickly to consumers, which increases farmers’ profit since they sell their product at a faster rate. Overall, the business to business relationship a company has with its partners is important because it will help the company succeed in foreign markets.

I agree with your assessment
that Wal-mart will get past these political 'complicat ions', due to all the corruption there is in India. Not to be cynical against walmart, but I can see them paying some government officials for decisions to go walmart's way. It unfortunat ely happens all the time in India, and I'm sure in other countries too.

I can see how Wal-Mart’s impact on Indian’s agricultural economy benefitted the local farmers, but there is more to it than that. In the short run, these farmers have increased their yield from production and most of all, a steady source of income. However, what lies ahead could possibly be reverse vertical integration. Once Wal-Mart established enough grounds in India, it is possible that Wal-Mart will start buying farmlands through local companies (foreigners are not allowed to purchase land) and start their own corporate farms. When this happens, Indian mom and pop farmers will lose their only competitive edge in the market and force to lower their price or even sell their land to Wal-Mart (in return, they get a job with Wal-Mart doing the same thing they’ve been doing). So how is all the pseudo-friendship building a gesture of kindness?
Some may argue that the scenario described above is the “ideal” situation for Wal-Mart and achieving that would mean bypassing India’s numerous political complications and restrictions. I am sure that given time, Wal-Mart will be able to work around the political restrictions and place itself as the number one retail/wholesale store in India. The only problem I can see happening at this time is a formation of workers’ union party at some point during the reverse vertical integration. This may hinder Wal-Mart’s profitability if it gets out of hand. This trend has happened in third world countries like China.

I'm a bit surprised to see Wal-Mart portrayed in a more positive light in this article. I think it's considerate of Wal-Mart to establish relations with farmers and suppliers in an effort to understand the Indian culture. However, whether that trust and good relationship will be maintained, how much Wal-Mart is willing to spend to buy their produce, and how much of the produce Wal-Mart will buy will ultimately affect how long the farmers and suppliers will continue to work with Wal-Mart. Though Wal-Mart appears to be gaining momentum in establishing a wholesale retail market in India, it's still uncertain how this will affect the agricultural industry and business in India in the long run. Wal-Mart needs to consider many obstacles, such as the restrictions placed on the retail industry, the laws in Indian agriculture, and the geographies of India, if it wants to successfully expand its growth and establish its presence in other areas of India. I think it'll be interesting to see what plans Wal-Mart has in mind in the next few years to overcome these obstacles.
ccarval2, 2 years ago | FlagWhile it is always important for a company to go global, the amount of time that this seemingly good relationsh
ip will last is questionab le. Walmart must be making a profit from this relationsh ip so they are likely selling the goods at lower prices than the farmers could afford to sell them for on their own. This would eventually lead to negative implicatio ns for the farmers. I doubt that all of the local people are happy with this new presence. Now, however, although farmers being paid "well" is subjective , this article focuses on the current advantages of the system and is very informativ e regarding that.
