The author of this article urges American consumers to beware of what they actually buying. Some food manufactures and Kraft deceive their customers about the ingredients in their products such as guacamole. This is how most of the food manufactures mislead the consumers to gain profit.
The author says that Kraft is using artificial flavors such as yellow#5 and blue #1 and hydrogenated oil to replace avocado. Avocado is the main ingredient in making guacamole. However, Kraft only put less than 2% avocado when making guacamole due to the high price of avocado. And the majority of ingredients are just hydrogenated oil and artificial flavors and they are used to get the appearance and color of avocado. The author states that guacamole without avocado is not guacamole just like a hamburger without meat is not a hamburger.
Another interesting point that the author mentions in the article was that artificial crabmeat contains beef plasma. According to the article, “Beef plasma is the liquid part of blood, minus the red blood cells”. I did not know the artificial crabmeat that I usually consume contains beef blood. Most consumers do not read the nutrition facts. They just grab the products and go as long as it looks like what they want to buy. Therefore, the author recommends us, as the consumers to read the label on the food products carefully to see what they actually made of.
I think Kraft and other manufactures violated the code of business ethics. I think they should not replace avocado with cheaper and unhealthy ingredients. Some people consume guacamole because they think it is healthy. Avocado is a healthy commodity because it prevents chronic disease.
