Reality Check on Delegation

This winter we have had a lot of snow, so I have been staying inside watching reality TV shows on Bravo

I used to think it as a mindless activity-no offense Bravo, I am a huge fan-- but lately they have offered great insight and food for thought in regards to management, team work, and most importantly, business relationships

My new favorite show, Kell on Earth, follows a fashion public relations, marketing and branding firm called People's Revolution.

People's Revolution was founded by Kelly Cutrone, show's namesake.   Episodes are undoubtedly edited to highlight drama and failure-many the results of  miscommunication and vague delegation of responsibility, but the fact is that many of the members of the team are not meeting expectations and deadlines, and that threatens the health of the relationships with the firm's clients.

The 'a-ha' moment came out of a segment with a newly appointed manager of interns.   She learned the hard way that just because you ask someone to do something, it doesn't mean they actually follow through and complete the task, and it certainly doesn't guarantee that they will be done correctly.

Next up is an analysis of Project Runway, or, a case study on how big egos and opposition to collaboration on team challenges end in lose-lose situations and tarnish relationships.

  • Umm . . . busted, again!

Undercover Boss (what I've seen so far) reveals how unaware senior executives can be of what life is like on the front lines.  There've been some great examples of bosses doing the right thing once they've been exposed to reality (no play on words intended).

Some places try to avoid this reality gap by requiring managers and executives to work a day each year in the delivery process, whether it's making hamburgers or filling orders for underwear.  Art

  • Art- thanks for revealing yourself as a reality tv viewer!  In our defense, they really are ubiquitous and non-reality is becoming scarce--almost endangered, really.

In response to the comment on ruined careers and brands in peril, you reminded me of a new show--one I am interested in but have not seen yet!  It is called Undercover Boss on CBS, and the premise is that a senior executive poses as an entry level new employee at his or her company and is secretly videotaped through the entire process.

If you've seen it, would love to hear what you think!  In the meantime maybe I'll try to catch it-- would probably inspire another blog post!

If it is anything like the clips they show in commercials I am sure it is shocking, and not in a good way.

  • I shouldn't confess knowing this, Mimi, but TV is full of real-life lessons about the consequences of failures in alignment, in delegation, and  in building the right kinds of relationships, in the right way.

The Apprentice, Top Chef, Last Restaurant Standing, any of the Survivor seasons - the list goes on.

Sure, the results are edited for dramatic impact, but in the workaday world, without cameras rollling, the results of these kinds of failue are planty dramatic enough.

Careers are at stake, brands are in peril, and corporate futrures are in jeopardy when business relationships aren't managed with both process and purpose.  Art

  • Thanks, Mimi. I've never seen the show but I certainly experienced the impact of vague requests and promises! Thanks for this real-life example regarding business relationships.
