Business Relationships

  • Key to good management is relationship

In reading Fred Kofman's Conscious Business, I am reminded about the research conducted by the Gallup Organization and published in First, Break All the Rules. Their 20 year survey of over 1,000,000 individuals from organizations worldwide concluded that how long a talented employee stays at a company and how productive that employee will be while thre is determined by the relationship with the immediate supervisor.  Not salary and generous benefits, not the organization's mission or charismatic leaders, not how much access to great training, but the quality of the relationship between the talented employee and the direct manager.

That's pretty breath-taking when you think  about it.  It would be interesting to share our personal experiences that support those findings.  Has this been the case in your own professional career?

Belinda, I have been thinking about this statement a lot!  It really is stunning to think about, but somehow I'm not surprised.  If you really enjoy where you're working-- and spending a significant amount of time in your life-- enjoying who you're seeing every day, who you're talking with every day and collaborating with, then, what incentive would you have to leave?   Thanks for sharing, I will remember this!  What do you think about the book, Conscious Business?  It sounds interesting-- should I read it?

  • Relationship is key

I've seen this a lot! Estimates clarim that approximately 60% of employees never deal directly with custoemrs, so employees are totally focused on the relationsjip with their boss--how can I please her/him? What do they want from me? You can see it in how they watch the every move and listen to every comment from their boss. Some new CEOs have reported being shocked by how the employees even mimic their style of dress. Most of us seem to want some external validation that we're okay or doing well. Makes sense that the boss fills that need on many levels.
